Lao Sun has been selling density board for seven years, and his opening line is always the same: "Go find furniture factories." And sure, furniture factories buy panels, no argument there. But the downstream factories that buy wood and wood-based panels add up to nearly 194,000 on Tianxia Gongchang, and furniture factories account for less than half of that. The other 50,000-odd wood-packaging factories — making crates, pallets, and skids — use just as much panel every year as a small furniture factory, yet they almost never show up on a panel salesperson's list. So where's the problem?
The Total Downstream Pool: 194,000 Factories, Not Just the Few Industries You'd Assume
I pulled up "factories genuinely using wood and wood-based panels" on Tianxia Gongchang: active in business registration with real social-insurance records, 193,922 nationwide. Broken down by panel form used, the distribution is as follows:
| Downstream category | Number of factories | Main panel form used | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood furniture | 73,390 | Large-format panels (density board, plywood, particleboard) | The main pool that consumes the most panel |
| Wood packaging (crates/pallets/skids) | 51,726 | Squared lumber, pallet stock, packaging board | A large pool that's often overlooked |
| Metal/plastic/other furniture | 54,264 | A small amount of wood fittings, or no wood purchased at all | Main material isn't wood — low priority |
| Flooring/wood processing | 34,519 | Solid-wood/engineered-flooring panels | Competitor status (processors); some are potential customers |
The 54,264 "metal/plastic/other furniture" factories don't use wood as their main material at all — handing out cards there burns money for nothing. Flooring and wood-processing factories number 34,519, but a fair share of them are your competitors, not buyers. What's genuinely worth developing is the 73,390 wood-furniture factories plus the 51,726 wood-packaging factories — together over 125,000 factories, with meaningfully different panel forms and purchasing logic, so they need separate playbooks.
Segment Customers by "Panel Form Used," Not by "Furniture / Non-Furniture"
Lao Sun's old list logic was: "if the industry mentions furniture, call it." The flaw in that logic is that wood-furniture factories buy large-format panels — standard 1220×2440 mm sizes, E1 formaldehyde grade — and care about surface finish and bending strength; wood-packaging factories buy squared lumber and pallet stock, and care about compressive load-bearing capacity and dried moisture content, with almost no requirement on surface finish. Pitching both kinds of customers with the same product deck gets you nowhere with either.
A more effective way to segment is by "panel form used," into three pools:
- Large-format panel pool: wood-furniture factories (73,390). Focus the conversation on surface-finish specs, formaldehyde grade, and thickness tolerance.
- Squared-lumber/pallet-stock pool: wood-packaging factories (51,726). Focus the conversation on wood species, drying treatment, custom-sizing capability, and whether you can issue an ISPM 15 heat-treatment certificate (required for export crates).
- Processed-panel pool: within flooring and wood-processing factories (34,519), the ones specializing in engineered or laminate flooring are genuine buyers, while raw-timber processors are competitors — filter those out first.
Once you segment by form, visit conversion rates improve noticeably — because the pitch you bring is aimed at the customer's purchasing pain point from the start, instead of making them explain from scratch what kind of panel they even use.
The 50,000 Wood-Packaging Factories: Why They Get Overlooked, and How to Approach Them Correctly
Wood-packaging factories get overlooked not because they don't buy panel, but because the term "wood packaging" rarely comes up in purchasing circles — a lot of salespeople don't even realize it counts as its own industry. In fact, a mid-size factory turning out 500 standard pallets a day easily uses more than 100 cubic meters of squared lumber a month, and an annual purchasing spend of 600,000-700,000 yuan is nothing unusual.
And this pool's geographic distribution is completely different from furniture factories' — it's a whole separate sales route:
Wood-packaging factories (51,726) · Panel form used: squared lumber/pallet stock
Top-tier provinces: Guangdong 12,507 (Dongguan 2,201, Foshan 2,183, Shenzhen 1,944) · Zhejiang 11,593 (Wenzhou 3,468, Jinhua 1,458, Ningbo 2,027) · Jiangsu 4,480 (Suzhou 1,391) · Shandong 4,433 · Hebei 2,432 · Fujian 2,124
Wood-furniture factories (73,390) · Panel form used: large-format panels
Top-tier provinces: Guangdong 12,063 (Foshan 2,864, Dongguan 1,632) · Hebei 8,687 (Langfang 2,830, Shijiazhuang 2,178) · Shandong 7,937 · Zhejiang 6,190 (Jinhua 1,603) · Jiangxi 5,174 (Ganzhou 3,568) · Jiangsu 5,102
Flooring/wood-processing factories (34,519) · The buyer portion after filtering out competitors
Top-tier provinces: Guangdong 4,394 · Jiangsu 3,623 (Suzhou 697, Suqian 555) · Shandong 3,385 (Linyi 811, Heze 744) · Zhejiang 2,759 · Hebei 2,080 · Sichuan 2,041
Wenzhou alone has 3,468 wood-packaging factories — a city that most panel salespeople have never marked on their visiting route. Dongguan's wood-packaging factories (2,201) and wood-furniture factories (1,632) are roughly comparable in number, but nine out of ten salespeople working Dongguan only know the furniture-city cluster and have no idea there's a packaging-factory cluster right next door.
Size Distribution: Over 90% Are Small and Mid-Size Factories, Calling for Two Completely Different Prospecting Rhythms
Among these 193,922 downstream factories on Tianxia Gongchang, by registered capital: 100,737 have under 1 million yuan (over 52%); 56,246 have 1-5 million; 16,267 have 5-10 million; only 17,245 reach 10-50 million; and 3,427 are above 50 million.
Looked at by insured headcount instead: 164,402 factories have 0-9 insured employees, 22,453 have 10-49, and those with 50+ add up to no more than 7,000 combined. This shows the downstream industry has an extreme long tail: over 85% of factories are workshops or family operations with under 10 people, with a very short decision chain — the owner manages purchasing directly. Factories genuinely large enough, and worth turning into stable credit-term customers, number only about 7,000 with 50+ employees, and need a completely different maintenance rhythm.
For panel salespeople, the playbook for these two customer types is inverted: small factories decide fast and pay on short cycles, but order small volumes each time — suited to batch outreach and WeChat maintenance. Mid-to-large factories order large volumes each time, but have long decision chains and need sample and credit-term negotiation — suited to in-depth visits plus follow-up. On Tianxia Gongchang, you can filter directly by insured headcount, list these two types separately, and schedule visiting rhythms for each without mixing them together.
Guangdong: The Highest-Density Battleground — How to Find the Right People Among 39,000 Factories
Guangdong is the single largest province in the whole downstream pool: wood furniture 12,063 + wood packaging 12,507 + metal/plastic furniture 15,066 — adding up to nearly 40,000 factories genuinely using wood across the province (excluding the metal-furniture factories that don't use wood, the actual panel-buying customer count is around 25,000). Foshan alone spans both the furniture and packaging pools, with 2,183 wood-packaging factories and 2,864 wood-furniture factories.
Working panel sales in Guangdong, if all you know is the Shunde Lecong furniture city, you'll miss the large cluster of wood-packaging factories (specializing in export crates and equipment packaging) around Dongguan's Songshan Lake, and you'll also miss the specialty-packaging customer group around Shenzhen's Pingshan area. Factories in these two areas have strict requirements for ISPM 15 heat-treatment certificates — if your panel mill can provide the relevant qualification documents, that's one more strong bargaining chip than your competitors have.
Langfang is another city Guangdong-based salespeople easily overlook: 7,901 downstream factories, 2,830 wood-furniture and 5,565 metal-furniture, concentrated around Yongqing and Anci, close to the Beijing purchasing market, with many small custom-furniture factories supplying North China distributors directly. Metal-furniture factories don't buy panel, but the 2,830 wood-furniture factories alone already make up a sizable regional market.
5-Question Checklist: Align on These Before You Head Out
Wood/wood-based-panel sales · Pre-departure checklist
- Is my customer pool segmented by "industry," or by "panel form used (large-format / squared lumber / pallet stock)"? If it's the former, resegment it.
- Does my list include wood-packaging factories? If not, filter Tianxia Gongchang first for the number of packaging factories within 50 km of your area, then decide whether to add them to your visiting route.
- In the flooring and wood-processing list, have you separated "engineered-flooring buyers" from "raw-timber-processing competitors"? Taking the whole industry list and calling straight through it will produce a fair share of wasted visits.
- Do the factories you're planning to visit have 10+ insured employees? Factories under 10 people are better suited to batch WeChat maintenance, not dedicated in-person visits — the travel cost isn't worth it.
- When working Guangdong or Zhejiang, have you included the wood-packaging cluster cities (Wenzhou, Dongguan, Ningbo) in your itinerary alongside the furniture clusters? Sticking only to furniture clusters will miss a second pool of comparable size.
Use Tianxia Gongchang to Screen Out This List
Lao Sun's seven years of experience told him to "go find furniture factories," but Tianxia Gongchang's data shows that the 50,000 wood-packaging factories he was missing are equivalent to about 70% of the furniture factories' volume. Search "furniture" by keyword on a registry lookup site and you can export tens of thousands of results, but a large share of them are metal-furniture or plastic-furniture factories that don't use wood — calling them is wasted effort; what Tianxia Gongchang filters for is factories genuinely using panel, with the noise already squeezed out.
On Tianxia Gongchang, you can layer filters across industry code, insured headcount, and city, and split the resulting list straight into two categories: small factories to follow up in batches, and mid-to-large factories to file individually — you can start working it the same day.
